What is pediatric dentistry?

Pediatric dentistry focuses on the unique needs of growing mouths, from infancy through the teenage years. That means tracking how baby teeth are guiding adult teeth into place, watching jaw and bite development, catching early decay before it spreads, and teaching kids (not just telling parents) how to care for their own teeth.

It also means communication built for kids: simple words, a slower pace, and plenty of encouragement. A child who feels comfortable at age three is far more likely to keep up with checkups as a teenager and an adult.

Pediatric dentistry services we offer

From first tooth to first braces consultation, we cover it all under one roof.

Infant and toddler exams

Gentle first checkups that check growth, spacing and early habits like thumb-sucking or pacifier use.

Dental sealants.

A protective coating on back teeth that shields the grooves where cavities like to hide.

Digital X-rays

Low-radiation images, used only when needed, to check development beneath the gums.

Mouthguards

Custom-fit protection for young athletes in contact sports.

Emergency care.

Fast, calming care for a knocked-out or chipped tooth, day or night.

Cleanings and fluoride treatments.

Kid-friendly cleanings that remove plaque and strengthen enamel against cavities.

Cavity-friendly fillings

Tooth-colored fillings that repair decay without drawing attention to it.

Space maintainers.

Keep room open for adult teeth when a baby tooth is lost early.

Habit counseling

Friendly guidance for thumb-sucking, pacifier use and teeth grinding.

When should my child first see a dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first visit by your child’s first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth coming in. That sounds early, but it lets us catch feeding and teething concerns before they become bigger issues, and it helps your child grow up seeing the dentist as a normal, friendly part of life rather than something to fear.

It may be time to schedule a visit if you notice:

  • A first tooth has come in, or your child is turning one
  • Thumb-sucking or pacifier use past age two or three
  • A chipped, discolored or wiggly tooth
  • Complaints of tooth pain or sensitivity
  • It has been more than six months since your child’s last checkup

Healthy habits for growing smiles

What happens between visits matters just as much as the visit itself. A few habits worth building early:

  • Brush twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste, using just a smear or pea-sized amount for young children
  • Start flossing as soon as two teeth touch
  • Limit juice, sticky snacks, and bedtime bottles of milk or juice
  • Never let a child fall asleep with a bottle other than water
  • Make brushing a routine, not a battle: songs, timers and turns can help

Small fix or full makeover - you decide

Not every smile needs a complete overhaul, and we’ll never suggest more treatment than you actually want. Some patients come in for one specific concern, like whitening before a big event or bonding a single chipped edge, and leave in a single visit. Others want a coordinated plan that addresses color, shape, spacing and alignment together, built out over a few appointments so the whole smile changes as one cohesive picture instead of a patchwork of separate fixes. Either path starts the same way: an honest look at what you have and what you’re hoping to change.

What to expect at your child's first visit

  1. A friendly welcome.

We keep the room warm and unhurried, and let your child explore at their own pace.

2. A gentle look around.

Dr. Gupta checks teeth, gums and bite, counting and cleaning with a light touch.

3. Simple, honest explanations.

We narrate what we’re doing in kid-friendly language, so nothing feels sudden or scary.

4. A plan for parents

You’ll get clear guidance on home care, diet and what to expect as your child grows.

5. A high five on the way out.

We end every visit on a good note, so the next one feels easy too.

Helping your child feel comfortable at the dentist

A little preparation at home goes a long way toward a stress-free visit:

  • Talk about the visit in positive, simple terms, like a checkup for their smile
  • Avoid words like “hurt” or “shot,” even when reassuring them it won’t
  • Read a book or watch a video about visiting the dentist beforehand
  • Let them bring a favorite stuffed animal or blanket
  • Praise them afterward for being brave, whatever the visit looked like
